Chapter 28 Sources of Freedom

This chapter concentrates on the recent events of 9/11 and the Iraqi war. The chapter opens by recalling the terrorist attack on America. Before 9/11 the Bush administration practiced a conservative agenda, cutting taxes, building defenses, and dismantling environmental policies. After the attacks, Bush launched a war on terror, and quickly identified an "axis of evil," which he dealt with in part through Operation Iraqi Freedom. American foreign policy was fundamentally altered with the 2002 National Security Strategy that advocated preemptive war. The document defined national security in terms of defending freedom and an excerpt is highlighted in Voices of Freedom. The war on terrorism affected society at home with the Patriot Act and a failing economy. Finally, the chapter looks at two monumental Supreme Court decisions, which reflected that the "rights revolution" was here to stay.
