Enter a time of honor and duty, the time of the samurai. It is Eighteenth century Japan, where a young tea merchant's son wishes to be a samurai. He has read books on them and knows their code of justice, which he longs to follow. His name is Seikei, and he has not been given the chance to express his true dreams or to achieve them. That is, until a precious ruby is stolen from a cruel and cold-hearted lord by a mysterious ghost. Seikei witnesses the ghost in action, and the next day a samurai judge comes to the lord's summons. And so Seikei's adventure begins. The judge knows Seikei is a smart and resourceful boy, plus an eye-witness to the crime, and takes Seikei with him to apprehend the thief. Of course, it has been Seikei's dream to learn the ways of the samurai, and he is overjoyed at the prospect of traveling with one. But soon, things get out of hand as Seikei and the judge become hot on the thief's trail and things become dangerous. But a question remains to the reader: Who is the thief and why has he stolen the ruby? The plot thickens, and Seikei learns a terrible secret about the thief, a life threatening secret that could cause the death of everyone he knows well. Seikei comes to a new realization and understanding of what it is to be a samurai as Dorothy and Thomas Hoobler draw this enthralling mystery to a conclusion. Truly a page turner, this marvel of a book will introduce readers to Japan and its fascinating culture, as well as keeping them wondering at what will happen next! Highly recommended among some of the best!
